hi I'm Aaron Boone principal here at Bristol Elementary School 1 aspect here at Bristol Elementary School is trying to give students a chance to experience many different things I'm Casey Underwood I teach kindergarten Here at Bristol Elementary School um today we're in the forest we try to come out every Friday afternoon we start with a smaller lesson inside or a story inside some times it relates to something we're learning in science or at 4 wins today we we talked a little bit about um what animals do in the winter and what happens when the first snow comes we sit and have a song and then the kids make a plan for what they want to do in the woods who has a plan what they want to do today Marlowe okay go ahead we we can use sticks to make bridges not machines it's a huge thing so that not even big kids can break it or grown-ups so that everything even animals can go cross the 2 we're doing a Snowman and we also like to explore Woods you put this on make sure you put the snow on it I got my favorite part about being outside is discovering new things outside and you want to know how to do step outside and then in the end we'll all come back um and we'll say why we're thankful for the forest so we call it Thanksgiving and they say thank you to the forest and they they did event today all right everybody thank you this time of year we have a door decorating contest that is run by the uh student council and each year we have a different theme where a class has to decorate their classroom door within that theme we are celebrating Black History Month and each classroom chose a famous or influential person to celebrate it was really cool watching everybody like like make their own door and we learned about how there's people who ran for president we learned about people who had all these great things that kind of brought a lot of people together and it's great how everybody gets to learn about new things and knew people who had such a great impact on the country writing and arithmetic but what kind of opportunities special opportunities can we give students uh Beyond just the 4 Walls of their classroom kcg to kindergarten and I teach second grade and we had a school counselor Jerry Urban it was just the finest and best of men who took us out with our kids and started this tradition with us probably 10 or 12 years ago um and he always used a hand drill but we're using regular drills now Casey and I have been keeping up this position and taking our kids out and tapping trees and making maple syrup the way real vermonters do slide it right over so that our bucket is coverage and nothing can get into our bucket we are tapping trees today in the woods we are at base camp 1 we have 12 buckets that we got and we are almost finished I think my favorite part about it would be just like being outside and just tapping the trees it's really fun to learn how to do it boiling boiling Sugar House
